“The rooms needed are specially designed hi spec isolation rooms because of the risk of cross-infection.” said Philip Watt CEO of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland (CFI). ‘They are absolutely essential for the safe care of our patients’
Head to Head is the brainchild of James Downes, parent of a child with CF and Eastern Branch member.
Mary Mc Carroll, spokesperson for the Eastern Branch said “we are very grateful for all the support.”

About Beaumont National Centre for People with CF
Beaumont Hospital is one of the two major centres in Dublin for adult Cystic Fibrosis (CF) care, yet at present there are only 4 inpatient rooms for CF patients. Recent research and international standards show that 13 CF inpatient rooms are needed as a matter of urgency in the hospital.
CF patients in Beaumont Hospital predominantly reside in Dublin, Meath, Louth and Kildare, with additional patients from Donegal, Galway, Mayo and Clare, as well as other counties. The map below indicates the counties of residence for CF patients in Beaumont Hospital.
Currently, 130 adults with CF attend Beaumont Hospital. This figure represents a more than 50% increase in patients since 2008, when there were 80 adult CF patients and it is predicted that 10-15 more patients will be added each year as patients transfer from paediatric CF centres.
About Cystic Fibrosis
Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited disease that primarily affects the lungs and the digestive system. Ireland has the highest incidence of Cystic Fibrosis in the world. Approximately 1 in 19 Irish people are said to 'carry' one copy of the altered gene that causes Cystic Fibrosis. When two parents carry the gene, there is a 1 in 4 chance of a child being born with Cystic Fibrosis. The median age of death for someone with CF in Ireland is 25 years of age.
